XII Conference on the Physics of Non-Crystalline Solids and 9th International Symposium on Crystallization in Glasses and Liquids

Background and Scope

PNCS

The XII International Conference on the Physics of Non-Crystalline Solids (PNCS XII) is the next in a series of successful meetings started by Professor V.D. Frechette (USA) back in 1958. Since then several other conferences have been organized in Alfred, USA, 1958 (chaired by V.D. Frechette) Delft, The Netherlands, 1964 (J.A. Prince), Sheffield, UK, 1970 (R.W. Douglas), Clausthal, Germany, 1976 (G.H. Frischat), Montpellier, France, 1982 (J. Zarzycki), Kyoto, Japan, 1987 (S. Sakka), Cambridge, UK, 1991 (D. Pye), Turku, Finland, 1995 (K. Karlsson), Tucson, USA, 1999 (M.C. Weinberg), Parma, Italy 2003 (A. Montenero), Rhodes, Greece 2007 (G. Kordas).

Preliminary list of topics to be covered:

  • Glass structure, nano heterogeneities in single phase glasses, and structure-related properties: Theoretical models, experiments and computer modeling.
  • Relaxation phenomena: alpha and beta relaxation, glass transition.
  • Liquid-liquid phase separation, nucleation, crystal growth, overall crystallization, glass formation and glass-ceramics (authors will be encouraged to submit their papers to the Crystallization symposium - please check below).
  • Glass properties: optical and photonic, thermal, mechanical, electrical and electronic, rheological, chemical properties, etc.
  • Glasses with new functionalities and applications: For instance: bulk metallic glasses, glasses containing nano-particles, hybrid glasses, novel glasses and applications in photonics, electronics, energy generation, medicine, dentistry and biotechnology, etc.

Crystalization 2009

The 9th International Symposium on Crystallization in Glasses and Liquids (Crystallization 2009) has a long and distinguished history. Symposia were held in the United States in 1961 (chaired by W.B. Hillig & G.E. Rindone), 1971 (L.L. Hench & S.W. Freiman), 1981 (J.H. Simmons, D.R. Uhlmann & G.H. Beall) and 1992 (M.C. Weinberg) with decade intervals. Recently, meetings have become more frequent due to growing interest in both the fundamental processes of nucleation and crystal growth in glasses and the development and properties of glass-ceramics. With the help of the TC-7 (Nucleation, Crystallization and Glass-ceramics Committee of the ICG), symposia were held in Brazil in 1996 (chaired by E.D. Zanotto), in Liechtenstein in 2000 (W. Hoeland), in England in 2003 (P.F. James), and in the USA in 2006 (M.Davis).

Topics to be covered:

  • Theoretical, simulational and experimental studies of nucleation, crystal growth and overall crystallization in glasses and liquids.
  • Amorphous phase separation and its effect on crystallization.
  • Glass-ceramic processing and the role of nucleating agents.
  • Photo-induced crystallization.
  • Microstructure/property relationships in glass-ceramics, including nano-crystallized materials.
  • Thermal, mechanical, electrical, optical, and chemical properties of glass-ceramics.
  • Applications of glass-ceramics, including medical and dental applications.
  • Crystallization phenomena relevant to other types of materials, such as igneous rocks, minerals and synthetic crystals, metallic glasses, polymer glasses, sol-gel derived materials, etc.
